Review: LEGO Star Wars 75299 Trouble on Tatooine

The Mandalorian is one of our favorite shows on Disney+, so we are excited to review LEGO Star Wars 75299 Trouble on Tatooine. This set was my Father’s Day gift this year, and I finally was able to build it! Based on The Mandalorian Season 2 Episode 1 (the one with Cobb Vanth, the Sand People, and the krayt dragon), this set includes The Mandalorian’s speeder bike, a Tusken Raider Hut, and a missile-shooting ballista. It is a detailed and relatively quick build, but with three great minifigures (including Baby Yoda) I am so glad I am able to add this to our collection.

Packaging

Immediately you can see on the box that this set includes the Baby Yoda (or The Child, or Grogu) minifigure! You can also see the three separate builds that this set includes.

On the back, some playable features are pointed out. These include the expandable Tusken Hut, the ability to shoot missiles from the bowcaster, and the very cute saddlebag that Baby Yoda can tag along in. Mando can also wear it around his neck like a baby carrier.

Instructions

The instructions feature the same art as the box, but notice that Darth Vader appears in the top right corner instead of The Mandalorian.

Minifigures

Let’s be honest, if you are like me you probably wanted this set mostly for Baby Yoda. He is small and cute. His arms don’t move and can’t hold things, but that is okay. His head can swivel and be removed. The base fits on one stud.

Mando comes with his Amban phase-pulse blaster, also known as an Amban sniper rifle, and his IB-94 blaster pistol. Don’t forget about his Mandalorian armor, cape, and beskar helmet.

The Tusken Raider is clutching his weapon known as a gaderffii stick (also called a gaderffii or gaffi stick).

I like the detailed printing on both the torsos and legs of these minifigs. Baby Yoda also has some printing on his torso. If you remove Mando’s helmet, there is just a black minifigure head underneath with no face, which is disappointing.

Build

This build occurs in three parts: the speeder bike, the Tusken hut, and the Tusken ballista.

Mando’s speeder bike has some great details for being a small build. But it is at minifigure scale. The back holds Baby Yoda’s carrier. The speeder handles are adjustable, as is the entire front section. There is a clip on the side to hold the blaster rifle. I like the floating footrest, although the minifig legs aren’t able to reach it obviously.

A knapsack fits on this side, as well as an extra lever down on the body of the speeder. There are some clear transparent parts on the bottom which makes it appear to float off the ground a bit.

The Tusken Hut is simple, but has some great details. I like the firepit feature, and you can see a leftover bone in a large cup on the right side.

You can also open the hut up to be able to play inside of it and can see the details even more. It doesn’t look very weatherproof but I wouldn’t expect a Tusken Raider house to be, would you?

However you want to refer to this, a ballista, harpoon, or bowcaster, it makes the Tusken Raider a formidable enemy. It can actually shoot projectiles as well and comes with two.

The shooting mechanism is the same spring-loaded one as on other Star Wars builds. Visually, it looks very similar to the one used in the show.

Can’t you picture being on the sands of Tatooine? The three builds flow nicely together and there are many different ways to play with this set.

Conclusion

With three builds and three minifigures, this set is a lot of fun to recreate scenes from The Mandalorian. It made a great gift from my son for Father’s Day. My favorite has to be the speeder bike. I like the mechanical details and the ability to haul around Baby Yoda in the back. Adding these three minifigures (all new to me) to our collection is a great bonus.
