Review: LEGO 40454 Spider-Man versus Venom and Iron Venom
In this review we take a look at LEGO 40454 Spider-Man versus Venom and Iron Venom. An exciting Marvel minifigure pack which also includes a small vehicle build. I saw this set in stores a couple of times before I ultimately decided to pick it up. I really like the unique minifigures Iron Venom and Pork Grind.
Packaging
This set comes in a blister pack packaging, as the other minifigure packs do. The front of the packaging shows the 4 minifigures with accessories that are included, as well as the small vehicle.
Notice that the back of the packaging only lists one minifigure as an exclusive. See the minifigure section below for more details.
Instructions
The instructions are pretty basic and is just one page front and back. The picture on the front is the same as on the front of the packaging, just with a different background.
Minifigures
Four minifigures are included with this set: Spider-Man, Venom, Pork Grind, and Iron Venom. Spider-Man has his work cut out for him as he is the only hero among 3 villains! It is pretty disappointing that all of the legs are simply a solid color. They stand in stark contrast to their detailed top halves.
I had never heard of Pork Grind before, but he looks like the Venom version of Spider-Ham. Both Pork Grind and Spider-Ham are from the Marvel Aniverse, where everyone is a talking animal. You may have also noticed Spider-Ham in the animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, where he is voiced by John Mulaney.
I had also never heard of Iron Venom, but fans of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Maximum Venom may recognize him from the animated series on Disney XD where Iron Man gets Venomized.
We mentioned this above, but Pork Grind is the only exclusive minifigure listed on the box, however currently this set is the only one that has Iron Venom as well. This may mean that Iron Venom may make an appearance in other upcoming sets.
Build
The Venom Buggy build is very quick. It takes longer to put the minifigures and their accessories together. There is nothing really special about this vehicle, other than matching Venom’s colors of black and white. The instructions for the build remind me of the old style, where not all of the bricks needed for each step are listed. This is probably to keep the instructions to one page only.
Its nice that the extra parts include Spider-Man’s and Iron Venom’s power blasts and another of Pork Grind’s hotdogs. I’m not sure why Pork Grind would be eating hotdogs, but we’ll just choose to ignore that part.
Conclusion
This was a fun, quick build and a great way to collect some exclusive minifigures and fun accessories. The price point is great, even if it just was for the minifigures. The main negatives are lack of printed legs and the Venom Buggy being pretty plain, but overall I would recommend this set to expand your minifigure collection.
