Review: LEGO 40511 Minions Kung Fu Training

LEGO 40511 Minions Kung Fu Training Review

In our first Minions set review, we take a look at LEGO 40511 Minions Kung Fu Training. This set is based on the upcoming Minions: The Rise Of Gru film. The release date was pushed back to July 1, 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, there have already been several LEGO sets already released based on this film. You are probably just as confused as I am about this set, well, because we haven’t been able to see the film yet to put it into context. We are fans of the Despicable Me films and the Minions in this set are cute and full of personality. It is a nice minifigure pack to pick up for your collection.

Packaging

The standard blister pack packaging is what makes these minifigure packs so unique. It includes four minifigures, accessories, and a small build. At first glance, I had no idea what this gray thing at the bottom was. But, once I discovered the name of this set was Kung Fu Training, I realized it was a practice dummy.

The back of the packaging shows the names of the minifigures: Gru, Bob, Kevin, and Belle Bottom. She is noted to be the leader of the Vicious 6, so maybe she is the villain in the upcoming movie. She is also listed as an exclusive minifig for this set.

Instructions

The instructions are small and one page, consistent with the other minifigure packs. Notice the in the background, the practice dummy is on the left. Although, it has a lot more detail in this picture than the actual build but at least you can confirm what it is.

Minifigures

The minifigures are well done. It’s hard to know exactly the context as the film has not yet been released. As I was putting it together, these weapon accessories seem sort of violent for a kid’s film. I guess being “Kung Fu Training” explains the weapons, but still it seems a little overkill. I will try not to pass complete judgment until the film debuts.

Gru appears to be wearing some dark blue pajamas with a scarf. Bob and Kevin are the stars of this pack. The different colored eyes on Bob is a nice touch, and give him a lot of character. They both have a lot of personality and you can just picture them talking in their Minion voices as you are putting them together. Belle Bottom’s name likely takes after her wardrobe which is beautifully done from her hair down to the printing on her torso and legs.

Build

As this is a minifigure pack, the build is small and fast. You can sort of tell this is a practice dummy from the front view. The back view has clips I am guessing to store the weapons when they are not in use. For really what is a micro-build, it is not that bad.

When put all together the scale of the practice dummy is minifigure size. It’s a good group of minifigs and makes us even more excited to watch the film.

Conclusion

The real stars of this set are the minifigures, especially Bob and Kevin. We just love the Minions! It’s hard to really judge this set based on a unreleased movie, so we’ll have to wait and see how this fits into the story line. Regardless, I could do without the practice dummy and weapons, and just create my own fun stories with the minifigures with my family. If you are a Minions fan, this set it worth it to pick up for the great minifigs.
