The LEGO Foundation has launched a new website, Learning Through Play. The site seeks to promote play in children throughout the world. It does this by providing education, activity ideas, research, news, and highlighting individual stories. Further, the site includes four main sections: Why Play, Let’s Play, How We Play, and About.

Why Play?

The Why Play section of the Learning Through Play website provides the educational background of why play is important for children. Specifically, this section focuses on five skills that children can learn through play:

  • Physical Skills: Playing games, sports, and other activities that build gross and fine motor skills.
  • Social Skills: Working together with friends and family builds skills such as listening, problem solving, and empathy.
  • Emotional Skills: Playing helps children recognize emotions in themselves and others.
  • Cognitive Skills: How to improve concentration, memory, and reasoning through play.
  • Creative Skills: Using imaginative thinking to solve problems in new ways

Let’s Play

The Let’s Play section of the Learning Through Play website provides fun and inexpensive activity ideas. Many of these activities only require items that you likely already have throughout your home. Others can be performed with LEGO bricks, but many of the activities do not require them. Each activity comes with a video explanation and picture instructions. Additionally, you can sort the activity list by age, duration, number of people, location (indoor or outdoor), and materials required.

How We Play

The How We Play section is an easy way to keep up with The LEGO Foundation’s most recent news, research, projections, and opinion pieces.

About The LEGO Foundation

In this section, you can read more about The LEGO Foundation and how they are promoting play in children throughout the world.

The website is a one-stop shop for everything you need to know about play! From learning why play is important, providing free activities, and promoting future research, The LEGO Foundation has created an amazing resource. Only a small portion of the site includes or requires LEGO bricks, which speaks to the website’s main mission of promoting play in any form. Furthermore, this site fits in well with the LEGO Group’s Rebuild the World initiative.

As a parent, it is great to learn about all of the benefits and skills that my child is learning through play. We definitely love to build with LEGO bricks, but will have to try out some of these other activities too!
