The 90th anniversary of the LEGO Group launches with LEGO CON 2022. If you weren’t able to catch it live, check out our recap for all of the exciting news. We saw new products, brands, activities, and special guests. Once again, LEGO CON was a free, virtual event in 2022. A two hour live show, it was hosted by Vick Hope, Joel McHale and Melvin Odoom.

This year’s LEGO CON had something for everyone. We found out new info on LEGO Avatar, Star Wars, Marvel, Super Mario, and more! Check out the table of contents to quickly jump to the reveal of each set.

90 Years of Play

Can you believe that the LEGO Group is celebrating its 90th anniversary? During this segment, two new LEGO ICONS sets are revealed. These are:

• 10305 LEGO Lion Knights’ Castle
• 10497 LEGO Galaxy Explorer

If you are an Adult Fan of LEGO (AFOL) you will likely recognize similar sets from your childhood! Let’s take a look at each of these sets in more detail.

LEGO 10305 Lion Knights’ Castle

The set takes inspiration from the Legendary LEGO Castles sets we all grew up with. It includes over 4,500 pieces, 22 minifigures, hidden passageways, and a medieval drawbridge. Specifically, this set was influenced by LEGO 6080 King’s Castle from 1984. It will go on sale starting August 8, 2022 with early VIP access starting on August 3.

LEGO 10497 Galaxy Explorer

Another nostalgic set, you may find this spaceship looks familiar. This set gains inspiration from LEGO 497 Galaxy Explorer from 1979. Travel to LEGO Space with four astronauts and their robot. Further, this build features three retractable landing legs, opening rear doors, and a retractable ramp to deploy the rover. It is currently available for pre-order and will ship starting on August 1, 2022.

LEGO Avatar

One of the most exciting reveals was the new LEGO Avatar theme. This set celebrates the iconic film before the release of Avatar: The Way of Water premiering this December.

Took a visit to my local Southern California Target to check out if there were any LEGO deals too good to pass up. I was in luck as I found LEGO DOTS on clearance! As far as Targets go, this one doesn’t have a greatest selection, but there is a fairly large clearance section which occasionally has LEGO.

With only about 1.5 aisles dedicated to LEGO, they have a nice display. I’m not really sure what this LEGO sign is, but it looks cool. Maybe it is some sort of machinery. There’s a minifig over on the right building an archway over the aisle. There is a decent selection of LEGO Harry Potter here.

This is another nice display over the LEGO Classic and LEGO Disney area. I like the scuba diver and her turtle, but I’m not really sure what she’s holding in her right hand. There are still none of the new Mickey and Friends sets to be found.

Love it or hate it, this Target has a large LEGO VIDIYO selection. This is a motion activated display of LEGO 43115 The Boombox. It basically just lights up when you pass by. There is no music or sound. It still doesn’t make this set seem interesting enough to pay full price for.

Lots in stock with nothing on sale. Maybe one day they will make it over to the clearance section and I will pick some up.

It is nice to see LEGO 71360 Adventures with Mario Starter Course back in stock. Still no Luigi.

After browsing the aisles, it is time to head over to the clearance section. Behold, LEGO DOTS on sale! I recently reviewed LEGO 41914 DOTS Creative Picture Frames after finding it on clearance at Kohl’s, and really enjoyed this set. So the opportunity to pick up some more DOTS on sale was too good to pass by.

Shown here are LEGO 41908 DOTS Extra DOTS – series 1. There were a total of 10 packs on sale for $1.19 each, with a regular price of $3.99. I bought all 10! I considered asking if I could take the box as well, but it was a little worn, and I’m not that big of a fan of DOTS to really have a use for the box. The rainbow poop on the front left of the box is interesting though.

Looking a bit further in the back, I found some LEGO DOTS Bracelets on clearance as well! These are LEGO 41900 DOTS Rainbow Bracelet, LEGO 41901 DOTS Funky Animals Bracelet, and LEGO 41902 DOTS Sparkly Unicorn Bracelet. These are on clearance for $1.49 each, with a regular price of $4.99. The first one didn’t have a clearance sticker, but the cashier honored the price of the other two.

In total, this was a great LEGO DOTS clearance find at Target! I’m excited to build on my knowledge of the DOTS sets and make some cool bracelet designs.

Welcome to our review of LEGO 41914 DOTS Creative Picture Frames! This is our first LEGO DOTS set review, and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised with how fun, creative, and interesting this build is. This set includes enough parts to make 3 picture frames and has plenty of colorful tiles to customize and decorate them. You can follow the suggested designs or have fun coming up with your own!

Packaging

Right away you can see that the box for this set is a bit different. This set is actually packaged in a storage tray that is very helpful when building and decorating the picture frames. But, it can also be used afterwards for LEGO brick sorting. As you might be able to see, I got this set for a great deal at Kohl’s.

The outside box does a great job at showing the different features of this build. It also provides some ideas of how to decorate your picture frames.

Once the outer cardboard is removed, you can get a great look at the sorting/storage tray. I like how the top is clear with the LEGO logo. All the small DOTS pieces are packaged separately which makes it very easy to open and keep them sorted.

Instructions

The instructions do emphasize creating your own design, but it does provide many different examples of ways to decorate the picture frames.

As this was our first DOTS build, I was happy to see this package insert showing many different DOTS sets. After having fun and being pretty satisfied with the picture frames, we are excited to try some other DOTS builds.

Build

The included tray is very nice to keep all the parts separate. There are even some shallower compartments at the north and south ends of the big middle compartment. This allows most of your time to be spent decorating and less time hunting for parts (which we always appreciate)! If you seem to be always hunting for parts check out our guides on sorting LEGO mistakes and best LEGO storage solutions.

The final build results in three different sized picture frames! I followed a suggested design for the small purple one on the right, but came up with my own designs for the other two. It was fun to try different designs and see what I could come up with!

LEGO calls these white brackets on the bottom left “z” bricks (technically they are Bracket 5 x 2 x 1 1/3 with 2 Holes, you can see why they call them “z” bricks instead). They are used to connect the picture frames as shown on the bottom right. This is a neat feature if you want to create a picture collage instead of displaying each frame separately.

At the end of the build, there are plenty of parts left over! And of course you can use the tray to sort and store your other bricks and pieces!

Conclusion

As our first DOTS build, the LEGO 41914 DOTS Creative Picture Frames was surprisingly fun and a great way to show off your love of LEGO with your favorite pictures. This would make a fun gift for parents for their home or office! One of the best parts is that you can keep the box as a sorting tray, and it does fit well in our existing storage containers!
